 Curricula with associated lesson plans, activities, handouts and other educational resources

This innovative resource is aimed at educators who want to find ways to convey essential information to children about sustainability, climate change and natural science in a way which is fun, engaging and memorable. We will use innovative techniques and pedagogical approaches to captivate pupils in science investigations, using literacy and numeracy skills in ways which are relevant and engaging, and performing creatively as they use and adapt to changes in their environment.


Objective

To develop, test and share best practices in teaching permaculture to children curricula with associated lesson plans, activities, handouts and other resources, which are replicable in different contexts.

This is essential to make sure resources are doable and clear, and that predicted learning outcomes are being reached. To share these resources with a wide audience, and accept feedback from that audience.

This is a key resource for our project, it will enable us to meet the objectives and priorities of the project by:
*identifying, developing, testing and sharing best practices in permaculture education for educators in formal, informal and non-formal settings.
*fostering quality improvements, innovation excellence and internationalisation at the level of education and training institutions, once used by those institutions
*disseminating good practices
* providing resources that provide high quality learning opportunities for educators in formal, non-formal and informal settings.
*Strengthening the education and training paths of educators – as they learn how other people teach permaculture to children
* providing high quality learning opportunities for children whose parents, leaders and teachers use these high quality resources in their education.
* enhancing the ECEC through providing age and pedagogically appropriate resources for educators to lead activities in the outdoors.


Target audiences

By the end of the project we aim that 500 educators (who could be from formal, non-formal or informal settings) will have accessed the curriculum and associated resources.
We hope that these educators will work with children in key stage 1 (age 3-6 years), and Key Stage 2 (age 7-12 years), sharing the lessons and activities described therein, with up to 5,000 children.

The lead organisation, PA, has developed a curriculum over 30 years which is essential for teaching permaculture to adults. Our aim for this output is that all children can grow up knowing and understanding the basic principles of nature, sustainability, and science and how to design their lives to take care of other people and other species on our planet, whilst taking only a fair share of available resources. The permaculture curriculum can be subdivided into 7 main themes-
*The context (climate change, permaculture ethics and principles);
*Designing – the importance of good design and a useful process for designing, e.g. a garden
*Soil (including building soil)
*Water (including saving water, and harvesting rainwater)
*Plants, Trees and Growing Food
*The Built environment and how we can reduce our ecological footprint
*Caring for people (anti-bullying, finding quiet time, looking after yourself)

Our partnership of kindergartens, primary schools and permaculture teachers will collaborate effectively to produce a pedagogically relevant curriculum for Key Stages 1 & 2 for each theme. Each partner will also develop relevant ways of collecting feedback from the children. It is very important for children to give us feedback so we can keep on learning & developing.

The Curriculum with Associated Lesson Plans, Activities, Handouts and other Educational Resources (e.g. posters {which educators can print out themselves for their classroom walls}, handouts, further reading, colouring pages for children, games, etc) will be ready to be published once we have example lesson plans and activities relating to each of the main themes of permaculture education, and by the 18th month of the project.
